CHOCOLATE BROWNIES to die for - two local ladies have expanded their love of cooking into a business producing unusual cakes, biscuits, breads and foodie trinkets.

For several years Lizzie Crow had been supplying the Old Ship Inn on the Ridgeway with delicious puds and preserves and has now teamed up with Bekki to set up “Homemade by Lizzie and Bekki” and they’re going great guns supplying farmers markets, Broadwey Village Stores and several other businesses in the area.

They source locally as many of their ingredients as possible, they cook fresh and to order.

Christmas hampers, starting at £10, are full of small packets of gorgeous things and they’re taking orders now until December 1.

Another thought – Lizzie and Bekki are interested in doing party catering, so bear them in mind if you’ve got something special coming up.

Screen Bites comes to Portland

11:30am Thursday 29th October 2009

SCREEN Bites, Dorset’s food film festival, comes to Portlandfor the first time tomorrow.

It will be visiting Royal Manor Theatre in Fortuneswellfor the movies and munching extravaganza.

The festival – the only one in the UK which offers tastings and a mini- farmers market, alongside food-themed documentary and feature films – is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year.

The festival administrator Gay Pirrie-Weir said: “We are really looking forward to coming to Portland, where the food producers offering tastings and a chance to buy their delicious products include Eggardon Rare Breeds, Coasters deli from Fortuneswell, Olives Et Al and new home-made bakery business Lizzie and Bekki from Upwey.”

The film is Moonstruck, starring Cher, Nicholas Cage and Olympia Dukakis, and the documentary is Savouring West Dorset, a mouthwatering look at some of the area’s finest food producers, by Screen Bites’ chairman, film-maker Robert Golden of Dottery near Bridport. The evening starts at 7pm with tastings.

Students from Weymouth College catering department joined Screen Bites last weekend to work with top chefs, including Lesley Waters and Rose Prince.

They took part in demonstrations at Bite The Lighthouse, a packed day of food, film and live music at Poole’s Lighthouse arts centre.

“The students were brilliant,” said Gay. “They helped the chefs prep and clear up and were on the big screen for the audience to watch.”

Audiences at Screen Bites’ food and film night at Portland’s Royal Manor Theatre will have a chance to try the breads, bakes and other products, made by Lizzie Crow and Bekki Bemrose at Upwey. The two foodie friends started their business just two months ago, and can now be found at farmers markets at Bridport, Sherborne and Poundbury.

Lizzie said: “We use as much as we can from local producers.”
