Who are we!

Lizzie & Bekki at Sherborne Farmers MarketWe ended up in partnership by accident really. I finished my career as a senior NHS manager (and serious person) in Dorset and did a bit more baking than usual – the term used once for my enormous kitchen output was described as extreme baking. Bekki who has an English degree and a passion for literature has worked in a variety of service industries, including managing charity shops, running a pub and more lately cooking in the ‘local’.

I have cooked for as long as I can remember and my first kitchen success was fairy cakes and one of my earliest food memories was my father rolling on his back with his feet in the air having eaten them!  Bekki came to cooking later (more bowl licking experience around the ankles of her mother whilst she made cake than anything productive!) but she has made up for lost time with great gusto! Lizzie thinks she makes the best bread ever! (Lizzie has a penchant for exaggerating!)

We joined forces ‘catering’ at the Medieval festival in the summer (and that term is loosely used) – most of the day was spent holding on to the gazebo in gale force winds whilst trying to serve cake. Our second venture was Melplash Show and we were thrilled that people seemed to like our food.
We’re both fanatic (in fact our boyfriends might, if fact would certainly, call it obsessive) cooks with a particular fervour for baking. I love foraging, with a choice of 4 dog companions – one with a great fondness for blackberries and mushrooms - and preserving and making cakes, and I’m influenced by a love of France and a slightly surreal imagination- Bekki, with less sophistication, by an insatiable and all-embracing appetite. Both of us enjoy making use of our extensive range of gastronomic experience across many countries and coming home to try out recipes using lovely Dorset produce. Bekki is a real fan of seasonal produce and the two of us enjoy seeing what’s available and experimenting to create specialist breads and cakes that are a little different.

Lizzie pulling a few buns out of the ovenOur obsessive compulsive tendencies towards all things edible, coupled with the fact that Upwey is too small a village to consume the results of our ever increasing bakeathons, led us to conclude we needed an additional outlet for our creations.  Which led us to where we are now- currently peddling our wares at Bridport, Poundbury, Sherborne, Sturminster Newton & Wareham Farmers' Markets. We also provide our breads, cakes and desserts to a variety of pubs and restaurants and catering services locally.

Our current best sellers are the Mother’s Ruin muffin (with plums poached in sloe gin), Adams Temptation (if the apple doesn’t get him the brandy will!) the Fig and Woolsery Goat’s Cheese Muffin, the Walnut & Blue Vinney bread and the Scarborough Fair herby bread.  The Cow Pie (Desperate Dan inspired) attracts some attention and is a result of my overactive imagination and a testament to Bekki’s patience and frankly talent (in my opinion, Lizzie).

Nothing left to add, but let them eat cake, brioche, bread, muffins, scones…..but not all of it because Bekki likes leftovers!
